Post subject:  Broken wing / wing repair

Hoping for some advice and or suggestions. Was removing my starboard wing yesterday, inching it up one end after the other, and somehow ended up snapping the aft leg almost completely off about 12" from the bottom of the leg. I'm guessing that would put the break at or near the deck line. Very frustrating. I've searched here and on the 18 forum and sounds like a welded repair to the wing is a bad idea. So what options are there? Can I put an aluminum tube or pipe inside that matches the inside diameter of the wing and then rivet?

Grateful for any suggestions.

Jim

Where are you located?

I have extra wing legs for my H21SE....maybe they are similar?

I’ve sleeved H17 wings in the past using aluminum tube/pipe. I forget the exact size, but I got the materials from McMaster Carr and onlinemetals.com. Use a verneir caliper to measure the existing tube ID or carefully measure with with a ruler. I added the sleeves to wings that weren’t broken to add extra reinforcement (the wings have a tendency to corrode from the inside out).

In your case I would put the sleeve in and then have a welder put a circimfrential weld around the broken tube to put it back together.

Thank you both.

Bill, I live on The eastern end of Long Island. I'm pretty sure the 20 wings are different, but thank you so much for your offer.

SRM - as usual, thank you for your help and suggestion. I'll go that route, sounds like the measuring is the most important part. I'll do that, order some aluminum, and bring it in to have welded.

Thank you,
Jim
