Hi Dan,

nice video and nice catch.

I am based in the Philippines and catch plenty of GT's and Spanish macks here trolling lures but didn't figure out yet how to hook tunas from the TI...(I am seeing sometimes tunas hunting on the surface but they don't like my trolled rapallas...)

From your video I see that you are casting for tuna.

Would you mind to share what lures you use when casting for tunas? Do they bite also on your trolled lures or is casting the best way to hook them?

peace
Serbi

G'day guys hope you liked it.

Roller, No I'm in Brisbane, used to be on the Sunny coast for 5 odd years, never made it to Hervey Bay yet but its on the list for the TI.

Serbi, I havn't had any luck trolling for tuna. When I see them busting the surface I flick a 5 inch soft plastic at em and it usually works every time.

Nice fish! I've caught plenty of longtail tuna with Rapalas trolled from an Island, but you want the CD Magnum kind for best results, not X-Raps. I reckon the metal bib makes a difference. They swim a little higher to and perform better at a wider variety of speeds. I also think it pays to remove trebles and replace them with singles. This would improve your chances on the marlin to, which you may encounter at Fraser this time of year

That said, if LT tuna aren't feeding on Rapala sized fish, they won't take Rapala style lures. When they are focused on a specific bait fish you either match the hatch or go hungry in my experience. And yes, casting at schools of tuna with plastics is generally more productive in my experience as well.

It's great to hear of others trolling experiences. I troll from my Hobie 14 and 16 here in Okinawa, Japan. Mostly catching wahoo, tuna, mahi and spanish mackerel in season. I wrote about it in another thread here https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=65600

Though I'm on the 14 and 16 and you are on the Tandem Island I'm sure there a lot of similarites. I tend to have most sucess around 6-8 knots usually trolling plastic skirts on pusher type heads. I run two rods and either have 2 skirted lures or one and a hard lure like a Yozuri Bonita or Rapala magnum deep diving minnow type. In mahi season I will carry a lighter weight spinning rod and cast lures at any busting schools I come across but for the most part I'm just puttin the trollimg lures out the back as I sail around the bay.
