Post subject:  Large sailing rudder question

I just purchased the large sailing rudder (part #81397001) and am kind of unsure if I received the right part. Although it is much larger than the original rudder, it does not look like the one in the accessories catalog. The one in the catalog appears to have a notch cut out of the top forward edge of the rudder. I assume this is for better clearance of the kayak.

The one I received does not have this notch, and seems to clear the kayak just the same, but is there something I should be aware of? Is one an older design? Is one better than the other? If so, why. Please, someone let me know.

Thanks!

We changed the shape a couple years ago. Maybe the dealer had the older one on hand still?

The "Balanced" rudder is very important for the Adventure Island, but I think is not important for all others. The "balanced" part is due to the MUCH larger sail area of the Island.

OK, thanks for your reply. I guess I won't worry about it, then. Just out of curiousity, what makes the balanced rudder better than the old one for the AI?

Just checked mine and it is the notched model. Mine was purchased on 9/12/2008 though they had just recieved their Hobie order for this year.

This rudder is an excellent upgrade.

There is a LOT more load on the rudder on the AI. The balanced blade helps is stay more neutral feeling. If you sail yours and feel the rudder is hard to turn under load... the balance one would be better, but I doubt you can load it up with a standard sail. Besides, we sailed the AI with that one for a year before changing it.
