Post subject:  Two right foot pedals on older Mirage drive
I had to borrow a friend's Mirage Drive the other day to retrieve the one I lost during my flip (separate post). He has an older drive and I noticed that it had two right foot pedals on it. Looking on the back it seemed to confirm that, since both pedals had a big R on them. It drove me crazy, because it didn't fit my left foot very good (understandably so). He bought his a while back from a dealer, so I am surprised that it came this way. I don't have his drive with me anymore, but looking at the photos I took it almost looks like the left pedal was cut and modified in order to make it fit. Surely the older models didn't come with two identical pedals. I was wondering if the new pedals are compatible with the old Mirage drives. Looking at the photos they are clearly different now (pronounced ridge on the back of the old model), but that doesn't mean they are not interchangeable.

I did not see the old part number in the Hobie Parts Catalog. In order to put a left pedal on this unit would he have to use an old Hobie Part number or would the newer model pedal work?

See these links for some photos I took. Two of the photos show the old and new drive next to each other while the photo with a single pedal is of the older drive. Note: The newer drive is easily identifiable since it has the numbers on it for adjusting leg length.

Looks like some creative adaptation. Hobie ran out of those pedals long ago. They were right and left threads. So it looks like someone took 2 right crank arms and reversed one to make a left pedal, perhaps because they could no longer get a matching left pedal from Hobie??

There are two ways to fix this. Hobie may still carry the crank arms. Your friend would order a left thread crank arm (81100) and replace his pedals with standard bicycle pedals. They were listed last year for $28. Keep in mind that most bicycle pedals are not designed for marine use.

The better solution, IMO, would be to buy a pair of current production pedal/crank arms [they come as an assembly now. 81221001 (L); 81222001 (R) for about $38 each, complete]. Or, he could just buy the left side to save a few bucks. They should fit the Drive fine.

The new assemblies have hollow crank arms and will lighten up his Drive noticeably. BTW, he can also get a pair of number decals for his Drive for $1 -- not a bad bargain for the convenience. I've added these to my old Drives -- they work great! 8)

The newer pedals are not compatible with older drives. Older drives had solid aluminum cranks with bicycle style pedals that had left or right threads. This is likely a right crank as well. The threaded shaft in the left pedal will not thread into a right-threaded crank. He could get a left (older) pedal (we have a few in stock still). Remove the plastic pedal part from the threaded post and install on the crank.

Matt - A few more questions:
Are the pedal straps for this old model pedal unique to right or left? I notice in the catalog that the new pedals have unique left and right straps for the pedals. If so - what would the correct part number be?

What is the part number and cost for the paddle (oar) strap for an older Sport? (the one on either side of the cockpit for holding the paddle).

The strap comes with the older pedal.

Paddle retainer bungee? I don't have a part number. It is just a length of bungee cord.

This is an older model Sport. It had a fitting crimped onto the paddle bungee and that in turn screws into the hull. The crimped fitting came off the bungee though.

I spoke to the owner of the older SPORT and got a few more details. He said that there is a clamp type of piece that has teeth in it and you slide the bungee inside of it. You then take a second piece that resembles a tubular lug. The tubular portion of this part slides over the first part and keeps the teeth tight against the bungee. Now you have a fitted piece on the end of the bungee and you then use a screw to secure the fitted piece into the kayak hull. The other end of the bungee has the same two piece fitting. After he told me that he said that he had already taken it to the Hobie dealer and they replaced the fittings on it and he is back in business!
