I have an '06 Outback with the standard rudder. After reading about the benefits of the sailing rudder I would like to upgrade. Unfortunately it looks like the sailing rudder is designed for the twist-and-stow rudder only. Does anyone have an idea of what to do? Thanks, Wali |

G'Day Wali, I posted a detailed how to on upgrading the older pull up rudder to the newer twist-n-stow back in Oct 07. I was going to direct you to that post but it has been corrupted and none of the pics are there! ![]() viewtopic.php?t=8125 Briefly it involved welding a small spacer plate and tube to attach the newer complete rudder assembly to the original stainless pull up mechanism. It is still working well on my Tandem. Another solution is to sleeve your existing rudder blade with a larger section. See Keps post here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7257&hilit=+sailing+rudder |

My 05 Outback did not track well and required nearly continuous course adjustments. Left hand always on the rudder handle. I followed Kep's instructions and made a sleeve that slips over existing rudder. Now it runs very true, still have to adjust course, but no where near as often as before I enlarged the rudder. You won't be disappointed...you just have to find the right material and adhesive. Good luck! |

Thanks Stringy. The pictures are great and I'm am going to try your design. Need to find a place that sells a sheet of PVC. The main reason for the sailing rudder is that I do alot of slow trolling for bass and am constantly turning the rudder to stay a course. I'm sure this larger rudder will do the job. Thanks again Mate. Wali |

Wali, The sleeve is Kep's design, not mine! Kudos should be directed to him! ![]() My missing post was about fitting the entire Twist-n-stow with sailing rudder assembly to the older pull-up rudder. |
