Post subject:  Rudder Up/Down Problem
Went kayaking the other day, and when i tried to pull the rudder UP, it wouldn't budge. I took it into my work area, noticed that the line was jammed inside of the back pulley by the rudder. After adjusting and thinking I had it fixed (everything was in the up position), I pulled the DOWN cord and the cord handle busted off and the other end went thru the hole and into the abyss of my kayak. After stringing the DOWN cord back where it belongs and readjusting the rear pulley, I ended up with 2 extra feet of black DOWN cord.

It "works" (haven't tried on the lake yet) but I'm not feeling that bungy elastic feel when i pull the DOWN cord. So my questions are:

#1) What do I have to fix to account for that 2 extra feet of down cord? Seems like it needs to be strung throught something inside possibly?
#2) Is there any way i can fix my DOWN handle?

I would really appreciate feedback. The diagrams don't seem too helpful, and any videos are of the older version.

You may have pulled too much cord out of the hull. There is a bungee inside the boat that pulls the line in... you may have that stretched out. To better understand what you are working with, I suggest a small digital camera to shoot a few pictures inside the hull (directed at the lines) to understand what the system is inside the hull.

Is the handle broken or did the knot release and the line slipped through?

Hi Matt,

After tinkering some more this morning and finding another pic on this site, I realized that I didn't run the cord thru the little front pulley. That accounts for the extra line I had.

The handle isn't broken. So I'm assuming I just need to tie a knot at the end of the DOWN cord...and jam it up the handle?

After trying to troubleshoot, I'm getting a better idea of how it all works under there. The name of the game is that any adjustments that need to be made dealing w/ the rudder all occur on the pulley drum in the back.

Yep... remove the sticker and slip the line through the handle and tie a good knot. Some people just remove the sticker to make enough room for a solid knot.

I have a 09 Revo and last week end (very hot) after rasing and lowering the rudder several times during the outing. The small screw that anchors the pully pulled through the hull while pulling the up tee handle. I temporaly patched the situation by replacing the screws w/ 1/4-20 X 1 1/2 SS screws w/ 1 inch fender washers sandwiching the hull, What would suggest for a real fix? We live in N.W. Arkansas 20 min. away from Beaver Lake and have been having some serious fun ever since we bought our boats! Thanks Rick Smith

We have since discarded the recessed and countersunk screws for pan heads. These will have far larger surface areas to pull against. You can also add a second one. The turning block has two holes.

Thats what I used 1/4 pan heads w/ 1 inch fender washers on both sides of the hull, works great very little stress on the hull, I think I will change out the inside washer for some 1 1/2 fender washers to spread the load out even more. Great boat, I,m going to get out of the bath tub in couple of weeks now that I"ve got this figured out and go to a pond.Ha, Ha. Great boats Rick Smith
