Thanks Roadrunner, This is very handy information, especially for those that do extended trips! ![]() Carrying a spare sprocket as well as a mast is essential when touring as it is very difficult removing the broken bit of mast that remains in the sprocket. I have resorted to drilling a hole and then using a small machine screw to get some purchase and extract the mast bit remaining. This is hard to do with the limited tools carried when touring. I am about to upgrade my main drive to the V2 threaded sprocket (using your guide of course! ![]() Has anyone actually broken a mast on the V2 threaded sprockets? |

Stringy, I was thinking about you and Chekika specifically, who take extended trips. It could be a very long trip back if you're at your destination with only one fin! The sprocket pictured is actually a V2 sprocket (an early one, before they put the V2 label on). But I can't complain -- That mast had about 810 pedaling miles (1296 kilometers) and sustained 3 heavy strikes (2 at over 5 MPH) before it cashed in. Additional sailing mileage is not included. I was pretty darned impressed with the piece. BTW, the sprocket itself is still in excellent condition. I see no cog wear, very minimal shaft wear and no degradation of the threaded brass insert! Rather than try to extract the mast residual, I just threw in one of the older pre-upgrade mast/sprockets that was sitting around in order to get the Drive up and running quickly. ![]() |
