Post subject:  Outback suv ok for open water?
I'm considering a used Mirage Outback suv. Currently it doesn't have the peddles but would it be appropriate for paddling open water with wind and currents, e.g. Florida Keys? I'm interested in day trips and possible camping.

It would do fine in the applications you mentioned IF it had the Mirage Drive. Paddling it will be a bit of a chore. Short distances...no problem paddling. Open water and longer distances...the Mirage Drive is a must.

He hit it on the head with that comment...... Outbacks are great boats. They can be paddled. If necessary. You'll be a little upset if you ever elect to for any reason other than making sure it can be accomplished. They're not your leisurely paddler type craft. Wide, roomy, comfy and don't point well. Pedal em all day. Paddle them if you have to.

If you want to drift fish on the flats with the wind there is one little problem with the sides. When you hang you legs over the side the little built-ins (or indentions) will rub your legs and will be very uncomfortable. Maybe 30 minutes and that is all you will want with the legs over the side and drifting.
