Apparently, you now need to get a title for any 16' or larger kayak or canoe even if you don't have a motor for it. Started 1/12/2010 and applies to even older kayaks you got years ago. NO registration is needed (No decal, no 3" numbers, no annual fee) just a ![]() ![]() No way to tell on the water which kayak is titled or not as you are not required to carry the title. So Marine Patrol don't care. When I asked the tax clerk/supervisor "why bother" with such nonsense she replied "So the state can collect more money" ![]() Apparently they will "create" you a title if you lack paperwork (all you need is make, model & VIN #) What this does is when you sell your 16' kayak for say $1,000 some poor sucker is going to have to pony up the 6% sales tax in addition the the title fees. Nutz! |

Sure doesn't give much incentive to get a title. Here in Illinois we have to title all kayaks & canoes. Its $13 for title & lic for 3 years, then $6 for an additional 3 years. We only have to display the stickers, no numbers. Cost more for administration than they charge. The reason I was given is to know who many boats there are in each county. Then they distribute tax money based upon number of boats for new/improved put-ins & take-out on rivers & lakes. Now that all sounds reasonable but here in Illinois someone is getting a take as we have two past governors in prison & another one on his way. Prison has its own governor wing! Now there is something the state can brag about. |

I'll waint until I get a ticket before I decide to get a stupid title. We ask NOTHING of the state so why should we get taxed? Its not like a boat that needs a launch, I can find the nearest dead end road or public beach for all i care. |

Dark colored kayaks, which absorb heat, would expand more .... get the light colored 15'9" ones and measure it after it goes swimming in cold water and has "shrinkage" ![]() ![]() |

Confuse any one who questions you. It's five meters and 30 centimeters. What's that. A bit less I think. Do you have a conversion table handy? ![]() ![]() |
