Ahhh now I get it! We do not have plans to sell this main hull as a tandem kayak at this time. |

That may be a mistake. Try kicking the below around at your next staff marketing meeting. 1. Tandem fishing is becoming quite popular, at least out here. 2. If you get a guy to buy the yak first, then the Island sail kit like the single Adventure, you make the cost pill easier to swallow over time. 3. Same as .2 above, but someone buys the motor option before the sail. |

Rather than compromise to make this also a tandem... The hull was optomized for the sailing configuration. There are those here who want to see it sold as a tandem, but we do have several tandems to address that need already. |

This is interesting.  I take it it is a marketing decision and not based on its poor performance in kayak mode only? So how does it perform as a stand alone kayak compared to the Oasis? Just when are we going to see some real world reviews Matt? I know Roadrunner is available!  Surely if the supply problem is due to a defunct mast manufacturer why not just give RR a hull? I am eagerly awaiting more details! |

Yes, definitely interesting. On one hand, Hobie has built some really cool sailing features in the basic design (dual rudder controls, high speed rudder, centerboard for example) that might be relatively useless on a tandem pedaling kayak. But on the other hand, the size and shape of the hull suggest something unique and distinct from the other tandems -- speed potential, spaciousness and storage that is definitely lacking with the other tandems, superior offshore and expedition capabilities and the ability to comfortably accommodate larger users. In their Mirage kayak line-up Hobie has 4 hard shell singles, 3 inflatables and 2 hard shell tandems. I think this boat appears to be distinct enough to add a new dimension to the tandem line-up. When I get a chance to demo one, I will have a big interest in its kayak capability in addition to its sailing characteristics. Having invested in the development of the new TI, I am hopeful that Hobie will see a spin-off opportunity with an upgradeable "TA" version in the near future if not right away. Perhaps it's just a matter of the company feeling confident that there are enough interested customers to warrant a jumbo tandem.

The built in centerboard and heavy hull never struck me as positive aspects when it came time to consider the Tandem Island as a kayak model. The Tandem Island was built for sailing - and rightly so. A tandem owner has the option to use it as a stand alone kayak which is a great dual feature, but the Tandem Islands use primarily as a kayak may not be so spectacular. Speed, stability and transportability of the TI as a kayak or even a sailboat are speculative without some test reports and comparisons to the Oasis and the Adventure Island. The videos of the TI sailing are impressive and I have no doubt Hobie has built a fun sailing trimaran. |

Yakaholic has pointed out some of the issues of the TI main hull selling as simply a stand alone Tandem. Others are hull rocker, tracking, volume (designed to support the weight and loads of the sailing rig). There are things that make this hull less than perfect to sell without the complete package. |

With it sold only as a full sailing package, I wonder how many states that consider the AI a kayak so no registration (like Hawaii), will consider the TI only as a sailboat (requiring registration)? |

Matt, Thanks. Good points being discussed here! Any idea what the hull only weight is? I take it the D/B is easily removeable? If so, is there a plug for the empty slot? |

From some earlier posts, the AI "hull only" is just under 80# and the TI "hull only" is about 120# |
