Post subject:  Hanging from garage ceiling

Hi gang,

I just purchased 2 new 2010 Revos! Dealer should get them in tomorrow. My plan for storage is to hang one from the garage ceiling and the other on "J" hooks below.

I wanted to know how far apart should the "J" hooks be for the Revo. (The hooks are the Suspenz ones in which the Revo will sit on it's side in a sling.)

Also what part of the kayak should I run the straps over for the hanging one? (I'm using 2" straps I got from REI and a tandem bike hoist I already have on the ceiling.)

I guess basically I'm asking where is the strongest part of the Revo to support it.

Thanks

Divide the yak in thirds and place the straps at the two marks... 1/3, 1/3, and 1/3 to distribute the weight. I hope someone from Hobie answers your question. I do the above for the past 3 years and have had no problems so far.

I think the recommendation might be to store the boat upside down, but that might just be if they are on level poles. Straps might spread the weight over a larger area reducing the risk of deforming the hulls. I've stored mine for a year on two metal poles surrounded with padding in the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3, method described above. I never had any deforming of the boat, but most of that time was in the winter months when the weather is cold (Canada) and the boat is hard. I'm assuming that the plastic softens in a hot shed in the summer time, so after reading somewhere (can't remember where) that the boats are best stored upside down, I have flipped the boat around, and can see the argument for storing it in this manner. Where the poles touched the bottom of the boat before, was a softer area compared to the places that the poles contact the top side of the boat while it is upside down.

Hobie instructions say to stow the boat either upside down, on the side or on the end. Apparently, the hull is too thin to support the boat right-side-up without deforming. A number of threads have addressed the issue of resting on carts, which seems to cause deformation... I stow my Revo on the side...

I've stored my Revo hoisted to the ceiling for a few months now.
No problems. As far as where to place the straps against the hull.
you will find that you have to place the straps directly under the
pullys for the hoist or you won't be able to lift it all the way to
the ceiling. You just balance the yak between the straps.

Congratulations on your new Revo! The strongest and most rigid part of the boat is on the rails (top outer edges of the cockpit or cargo well. I store mine upside down using straps in those areas and have no problems. 8)

Have fun with the Revo's
This link gave me the information I needed for a hoist for our Oasis: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=16799&hilit=+hoist
