Hey gang, I am sure many of you already know this but for those who don't. When I was going to the 10,000 Islands and planned on taking an unfamiliar route I was looking into a handheld GPS. I wanted one with chart capability because a simple arrow and bearing while skooting around a maze of magrove islands just did not seem to me too accurate. The ones I saw with charts were very pricey and then you still had to buy the chart SD cards all bringing the price ranges up to over $400.00. A price I found excessive since I do not frequent areas I need GPS navigation. I have an Iphone and the store clerk told me about iNavX. A $50.00 application and you get all charts of the US coast and lakes with other areas and map brands you can also purchase for an annual fee. Let me tell you it was the best $50.00 I ever spent. The chart of the Chokoloskee Bay and surrounding 10,000 Islands was a gem. The buit in GPS of the Iphone was accurate to within feet of my positon and my companions who had basic handheld GPS with only directional arrows, bearings and saved waypoints ended up using mine for the trip. A waterproof case from Dry Case with a headphone jack for tunes on the water works perfectly. I leashed the Dry Case to my PFD and kept it in the pocket till needed. If you have an Iphone and need or want on the water GPS navigation in your kayak get iNavX it is so worth it. I have a Lowrance 527 on my flats boat with the map chip. I also have a handheld Garmin GPS 76. The 527 is great in the flats and open water, colors screen, depthfinder and easy to use. I thought about putting another hookup on the kayak because the miles and miles of rivers, creeks, islands and dead ends are many here and it is easy to get turned around or not ending up where you want when exploring. However, this would have required a little work, some expense, and I found that the maps in the backwater areas are worthless on the charts and on the GPS. The 76 has no maps, no color, has no depthfinder. It mounts easily out of the way, is small, and perfect for the kayak in backwater areas. What I do is go to Goggle Earth (Free Download Program). Pick the areas I want to go to (its perfect for finding backcountry shallows the powerboats don't go and you can actually see the reefs that are best to fish). Then I transfer the waypoints to the area selected from know points to the 76. The last thing I do is print a copy of the Goggle map and stuff it into my shirt. Haven't missed a area this way yet. If you haven't used Goggle earth maps they are overflight pictures, you move the cursor and you get perfect GPS coordinates. Just make sure your GPS and Goggle are set to the same formats. I have been to 10,000 Island quite a few times in my flats boat and still have trouble finding my way around. Next time I'll use this method. If you want a depthfinder and fixed GPS then you have a different choice to make, but none of the maps I know of are going to be right on like a photo in the 10,000 area.

Here's another option for Iphones... I have it but haven't spent any on-water time with it yet. http://www.navionics.com/MobileLakeFeatures.asp I plan to pedal troll for crappie along contour lines etc.
