My, title/tax people may need some education so I hope to garner a few facts before I stand in line. :(

16' Adventure kayak with Evolve.

Now, Florida requires any motorized watercraft to be titled and registered.

Now which class is it?
Class 1 is a 16' boat (up to 26') and cost $35.50 per year

Class A-1 is for all boats less than 12' in length and ANY motorized canoe regardless of length - cost $12.25 per year

A canoe is defined as:
Canoe – A light, narrow vessel with curved sides and with both ends
pointed. A canoe-like vessel with a transom may not be excluded from
the definition of a canoe if the width of its transom is less than 45 percent
of the width of its beam or it has been designated as a canoe by the United States Coast Guard.

There is no language specific to a kayak - particularly when you add a motor.

Any light to be shed, particularly from Florida dealers would be appreciated.

Obviously, I think canoe = kayak as Class 1 can include huge power boats - which the Adventure is not.

BTW - Love the Evolve motor :D

EDIT: Update! After talking with the County Tax Supervisor I was told that all they ever do is go by length, ie 16' - 26' boat is $35.50 Class 1. I pointed out to her Florida Statue 328.72 states: "Class A-1--Less than 12 feet in length, and all canoes to which propulsion motors have been attached, regardless of length"

http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?mode=View%20Statutes&SubMenu=1&App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=328.72&URL=CH0328/Sec72.HTM

(the fees have been raised since that 2009 statue - but otherwise is correct)

And asked her what about that? am I reading it wrong? She had to call Tallahassee to confirm what I was saying

Turns out I was right :!: I pity all the kayak/canoe owners who have to pay $23 more every year. She agreed a kayak meets the definition of a "canoe". What you must do is when registering the kayak make sure they use the code "CN" (for canoe) and your good to go.

If they give you a hassle just print out the statue or consult the "Facts for Florida Vessel Owners" http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:s7BCBzsCI5gJ:www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/FFFVO.pdf+florida+boat+registration+PDF&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjwKE9IygKBIAmA-b-gO1zHEUzjRadNSKsvMK260LmXHvNqA6K68fO8vfu9drVkSth8gb-yofFUBE_6WHaQHh6JDG6CCGAByZ_N9v4vlSuFLoBa2TWkEd8Su7E1FRn0nwDSi0fN&sig=AHIEtbRikre8wdiAzit9REl9jcMKzEpSzg

$12.25 cost instead of $35.50 - wonderful
Educating our government and public servants - Priceless
