Hi folks, I am now enjoying the 2010 Outback that Hobie sent to replace one of my 2009 Outbacks. However, I have noticed a subtle difference in how the rudder behaves on the new one. On my 2009 Outbacks, I didn't have to lock the rudder in place using the hold down cleat. On my 2010 Outback, I definitely have to use the hold down cleat; otherwise the rudder flips upward and steering ends. I noticed that the indent on the fin seats very loosely into the hook on the rudder assembly when in the down position. It disengages very easily with very little pressure. On my other 2009 outback, the indent snaps into the hook snugly and stays there. Any adjustments possible? Thanks, RickM46 |

I have not found anything to fix to correct the problem. I do know that when you lock the cable/string into the cleat that I have broken one pin that hold the rudder in the main holder. Pins do not cost much less than three dollars. But when broken you are left to paddling only with the pin broken. I bought three pins so have spares. I cary one with me now just in case of a needed repair on the water. Good Luck. I hope Matt responds to your inquiry. OH, I forgot to tell you what I have been doing to get a better lock on the rudder, but not foolproof. To engage the rudder use the steering and shake the rudder left and right about two or three times to get it set into the slot... But I still set the cable into the cleat too. |

Use the down line cleated. This is standard on all Twist and Stow rudders using the rope pull system. Older boats using the lever style up/down incorporated a cam (over center) action to hold the rudder down. |
