Post subject:  Storage racks/best method

I've been storing my kayaks on a trailer in the garage with them lying top down on two padded 2 by 4's. Since acquiring a boat, I've moved the kayaks to the back screened in-porch but need to build a rack so that I can stack them.

First question, does it matter if the they stored flat, top down, or on edge. With flat I can build two shelves and store them one of top of the other. With the edge, I just strap them back to back. So which is better storage, top down or on edge, or does it matter. On edge would certainly be easier as 2 low level L shaped boards with a hook of some type on top to fasten a strap around the yaks.

Second, anyone got any pics of something similar. I'm planning on using wood rather than the often used PVC for construction though I'm not opposed to pvc.
