Post subject:  Outback seat kills my lower back!
Hi, all.

Rather new to the forum, and I couldn't find specific info on where I could find/buy/make a better seat for my Outback? Long trips are easier pedalling than paddling, but my lower back pays for it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We use inexpensive boat cushions behind our seat backs. Even then, my back can really pay a price if I do it for too long, which is part of the reason we went to the Tandem Island.

I assume you are new to the boat as well as the forum. I spent many enjoyable hours on an Outback both sailing and pedalling and the good news is that you will get used to it. First time you do 2hours you can barely get out of the boat - after a few trips you'll find the seat more comfortable as you learn to relax. As for paddling that's an emergency option. I now have an AI because I love to sail but I still love the Outback. Keep at it I promise you'll have a different opinion of the seat after 5 more outings.

Hi Iboiv001,

I posted this stream a while back and might be helpful. Many others added their input as well.

My wife has 2 swollen discs which have improved but when we go out in our revolutions she uses my Skwoosh seat setup and she has no sore back issues.

Scan through the stream and you may find some helpful hints.

I have done 14 mile trips with the high back Skwoosh with no back pain afterwards.

I use a plastic molded seat set on top of the Hobie Canvas seat. Then tighten the straps on the Hobie seat to adjust the back of seat to where i want the angle for my legs and back. The molded seat cost about 10 bucks on sale. If you have a Wal Mart check the fishing department. It works great for me. Good Luck!!

What year is your Outback? Hobie has made 3 different seats since 2006 -- it would be good to know which one you have. 8)

I had the same problem. I bought this Seattle Sports "Bilge Buddy" sponge with strap and buckle. When buckled in place right at the base of the outback's seat it provides a little extra support exactly where I needed it for my lower back (see photos). And as a bonus it serves double duty as a blige sponge! :)

2010. I think that I may try the plastic boat seat to save some money, and if that doesn't work, then maybe look at the skwoosh......

I'll have to see if the local dealer has one I can test drive.
