I was only able to catch the last half hour of this show and will be trying to catch the first half. It's a tragic story of a man who try's to solo kayak from Tasmania to New Zealand and almost makes it. Despite surviving a horrendous storm in open ocean, he is lost almost 30KM from his destination; though his kayak was found, he, his life jacket and radio are never recovered. I have often soloed the extreme back country of the Grand Canyon and been chastised for it many times, for all the right reasons. I enjoy soloing as I don't have to keep anyone's pace but my own and other reasons. But I have to admit it does take more planning and awareness than just strolling along with a group. Cool. I will have to try and catch that on TV. I love to solo on a small scale. There is just nothing like being in the wild all alone. You are just much more keenly aware of your surroundings and all things in it. Wonderful. |

Take a close look. The hatch could have been the problem in what was possibly a hypothermia siyuation. |

A tragic tale and they do suspect the damaged hatch prevented him from righting his capsized craft. Such a shame to go so far (over a thousand miles) and die 83 miles from your destination. Definitely a heartbreaking story. What he endured on that trip could make any extremist twinge. Highly recommended viewing, look for it. Revo |

As a former Captain and Charter Captain, a large portion of my attention was devoted to the safety of crew and passengers. Now most of my Kayak trips are Solo and I feel less distracted. It is very enjoyable to conduct a fishing operation without the teaching, and cautioning. It is still safer to Kayak with a capable partner...when one is available. To me Andrew McAuley was a seasoned employee of NAt.Geo. He was also what I call an adrenaline rush seeker. From the original reports this accident is another case of a rider becoming separated from his ride. He made the call and was not in the Kayak when it was found. The video showed he was distraught and had doubts when he left his family, not a good state of mind. I hope that I would choose to stay on land if in the same state of mind and recommend that to all kayak riders. When in doubt, don't go out. |

I was able to catch the whole broadcast from the site and enjoyed it from start to finish. Andrew lacked some stability in his life. I am so sorry for his wife and child. An adventure like that is just not worth the cost of losing a husband or father. I only hope the survivors will be able to pick up the pieces of their lives and go on.
