Got tired pedalling the other day so shifted fwd and operated the pedal drives by hand by holding the stems and pulling/pushing each one. My legs weren't aching next day but my arms sure were - would love some sort of extension attachment with handlebars to operate pedal-drive by hand for a change. This would also let my friend who has had foot/ankle surgery come along (I have a double kayak). Anyone know of anything like this? maybe Hobie should make it as an option? ![]() |

Toyed with the idea of modifying a pedal drive unit to accommodate hand power but realized there is no way to steer when pedaling by hand unless the steering cable is somehow routed through the pedal unit so it can be operated by hand while pedaling by hand. To do such a thing really requires a new hull design. If you don't want to pedal your double kayak, it can be propelled by hand using a standard paddle. ![]() ![]() |

Simple adaptation -- simply loop over the pedal shafts to use; easily stowed when done: ![]() ![]() |

Sounds all too difficult. I'd probably just use the paddle. |

Beginning to sound like telephones... first we had phones so we could talk to each other without having to write... now we've got phones to write to each other and don't have to talk. Then we get pedals so we don't have to paddle by hand, now we want to pedal by hand so we don't have to use our feet....... The beauty of the Hobie pedal/paddle combo is that we can do whatever we want! What a concept! |
