Post subject: | Mirage drive storage |
Just picked up my two Oasis 11's yesterday and I'm wondering what the best way is to store the 4 mirage drives that I have. Is there a way to hang them on a wall mount? Also any links to preventative maintenance that I need to follow? Thanks |

I too have 4 drives and they are pretty awkward to store. I have exposed roof joists in my garage where I store the drives... What I did was took a long length of line - tied the ends together to make a long loop - pushed one side of the loop over a joist in my garage roof - now I have 2 loops hanging down one each side of the joist. A Mirage drive hangs perfectly by the pedals in these 2 loops. Shorter loops means they hang higher and I stack my drives one above the other in successively shorter lengths of rope. Re periodic maintenance: keep them outa the sand & don't bash them on underwater obstacles/the beach - wash in fresh water after use - give them an occasional squirt of some sort of lube (e.g. WD/40) - keep an eye on the cables for signs of breakage at the swages and of the plastic sheathing and the adjustment of the cables - if you are using turbo fins keep a spare fin mast or two in case of breakages. Re cracks in the cable sheathing - what happened to me was as follows: a crack developed in the plastic sheath on one of my idler cables - the one that goes over the wheel at the front of the drive. I didn't think much about it, thinking that the sheathing must have just got a nick from something - and after all, that cable doesn't seem to be under any particular stress, right ?! Wrong !!!. Without me really noticing it the nick gradually grew wider & wider until it spread right around the cable & separated the sheathing into two parts, one on each end of the cable. I noticed that the cable seemed slack & tightened it up. The next thing that happened was that the whole cable snapped in the middle - the steel wires just pulled apart in the middle like a strand of wool breaking. The nick in the sheathing had been the first sign of the cable breaking and what was causing the nick and the increasing size of the nick was the cable lengthening as it pulled apart. I should say that this cable had seen many years of reasonably hard use so I do not feel hard done by but if you should find a nick in the cable sheathing it may be the first sign of a similar thing happening to your drive. |
