Post subject:  Mirage Drive - Fins hanging loose

Hi. I was wondering whether anyone could give me some advice with regards to the mirage drive system on an 2006 Outback. When I returned from a recent kayaking trip I noticed that one of the fins was hanging loose. I checked to ensure that the allen screw was tight and it was fine and the sprocket shaft that connects to the fin was securely in place. It seems that the fin just slides down this sprocket shaft and probably dropped down too far while in the water. Is this meant to happen or is there anything I can do to prevent this, such as gluing the shafts to the fins? Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Since this is a 2006 Outback, you have the "V1" Mirage Drive.
If the shaft is truly secured into the head assembly, then the aft pin is missing?
In which case the fin will slide off the shaft and you will loose it.

Otherwise, it seems the shaft is not staying securely in place/seated in the sprocket head assembly.
Have you loosened the set screw to see if the shaft will go deeper into the sprocket head?

The fin is only attached to the drive at the rear (clew) end of the fin. If that is what the fin was hanging from... I'd guess the mast fell from the sprocket. Other than that? ... The fin would be gone.
