Hello folks, I am wondering what the hobie is made of qua material, can I use epoxy to adapt it if I want ? Regards, Rick. |

I believe it is called hi-density polyethylene. I believe that normal epoxies do NOT adhere well to any polyethylene though there are a couple of epoxy products which are marketed as doing so but which are (apparently) expensive and/or tricky to use: search these forums and you should be able to track them down. Personally I do not intend to risk wrecking or making any of my boats unsailable and/or unsaleable as a result of drastic modification with glues that may/may not work... what have you got in mind ? |

Hi stobbo, With modifications i mean stuff like building in a compass, adding handles to lift it up to my balcony on 1 story high if needed. Building in a radio and MC27. and antenna's. The outback can handle 180 kilo's so I will make good use of that when I will buy it in a few month's from now. Regards, Rick. |

Hi Rick, There are a variety of ways of adding things to the boat without the use of adhesives. Believe it or not you can even weld things to HDPE using a heat gun if your gutsy enough to do it (I'm not). However most of us add things on using pop rivets and stainless steel bolts, nuts, backing plates etc. Some of the items you may want to add already have kits available to attach them to the boat. I'd be a little careful about adding handles to lift the boat up as it could cause warping to occur. Many of the folks at this site have devised ingenious ways of lifting their boats off the tops of cars etc. for storage near the ceiling of their garage. Check out some of the past entries and you'll find all types of information related to lifting and storing of the Hobie kayaks. Anyway, I hope you get your boat soon. Once you have it I'm sure you'll get as creative as the rest of us in making it uniquely your own. - Roger |
