If I may add to this post, based on the previous one: The most easiest place to get your kayak stolen when it is in full view of the public. (For example) Whilst, you pull over for a meal at Denny`s on your way to your fave launch you come back and find the top of your vehicle missing, Ouch! Some hints that may be help full here to avoid this possible Nightmare: 1) Use a very secure cable system that can be used while you are car topping as well as locking up your baby at home for storage. Use rubber coated locks and nylon coated cables to avoid damage to the top of your car as well as rust lockup. (I prefer combination locks to keep the key level to a minimum) 2) The weakest link in your security system will usually be your rack. Please spend the extra few dollars and get the lock mounts for your rack system. 3) If someone steals your mast or your Amas (ie: sail modified kayaks, AIs, TIs) it may look like a win to the thief to modify his own kayak until he takes it home and finds out it was a waste of time and ditches it far from his home. Find a way to secure all the parts sitting on your roof. Consider a system like this: http://www.orsracksdirect.com/inno-in73 ... older.html Remember, even one missing screw can ruin your day as you travel. 4) Keep all the goods in your vehicle hidden: The old saying still sticks: You cant steal what you cant see! I heard about some people who stopped on the road for a meal, boats locked to rack. When they resumed their journey, the rack fell off on the road... Somebody had been trying to remove it, been interrupted, but left it in an unsafe state. |

When I'm traveling long distances with my kayak (to Maine, etc.) I secure it to my rack using the Kayak Lasso lock product (just a long, double-loop-ended combination lock cable). It seems good enough to deter theft during lunch or other stops along the way. |

Not yak related but leads me to remember when I was moving my mom from South Dakota to Az....we stopped in Grand Junction (I think) and got a bite to eat. I came out to get my wallet and there are 3 guys screwing with the back of my truck. I yelled at them, and then they acted like it was MY fault for going in the restaurant. I couldn't believe it. Some people are so dumb. Of course, when I got my cell, they bolted like a bat outa h3ll. |
