Post subject:  New Outback Leaning to one side

Hi all,

Im new to kayaking and new to the forum. I just bought an Outback and a Outfitter. I have a wife and two kids. We all had to be able to fit.

Took them both out the other day. Noticed that the Outback leans badly to the starboard side. This happens to the hall by itself. (no seats or drive). I looked as best I could for something inside but saw nothing. I thought maybe Hobie left me some tools. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? It leans quite a bit and seems like it would have to be pretty off balance to lean as much as it does. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Outback sits high and will lean to one side when unloaded.

Was your paddle strapped to the side? My Outback sits level in the water
until the paddle is strapped to either side.

I have seen this in my 2013 Outback with the Hobie seat in it, about 3/4 to a inch lean to the right.

Moving a little to the left and it would go away. Never could figure out if it was the way i was sitting in it or the Outback itself, after putting the Jackson elite seat in it went away. Must have been me.

Was the Jackson Elite seat a straightforward swap or did you need to modify a few things? Any pictures?

A picture of this problem might helps us determine what we see in the picture.. Most of us are guessing by your description of what you have done to cause this. Hope this helps and you have pictures of the leaning?

The Outback has a big bulge along its keel which extends deeper into the water. When the kayak is unloaded, it can flop over on its right side a bit so it's floating on this bulge and the right side of the kayak. when you climb into the boat, your weight will shove the bulge down into the water, and the kayak should level out with both sides of the kayak having the same amount of freeboard.

2014 Hulls don't have the original bottom bulb shape and do not tip to one side or the other like the old hulls, so this is very odd.

Perhaps there is some asymmetrical distortion to the bottom? Easily reviewed by rolling it over.

It is possible to tilt by sitting off-center in the seat.

Do these hulls lean to one side when you are sitting in them? If not then, personally speaking, I wouldn't worry about it :)
