While fighting two fish at once today one got wrapped around my Turbo fins. My braided line cut into them pretty bad. What are these made of? Can they be plastic welded? |

They can be welded; I fixed where the mast end punched through the side just last week, and it is almost undetectable. I used a 25 watt chisel tipped soldering iron, and found that to be about perfect . I do not know the material, so if you need added material, I don't know where to point you. You can purchase one new turbo fin for $28.95 (Austin Kayak is a good online vendor if you are not close to a stocking dealer). |

Mend them with a soldering iron as has been suggested - it is not hard and is durable. The name of the material has been posted by Matt Miller somewhere on these forums if you really need to know but what you can do is to cut a little excess material from the top of the fins (near where the chain cables pass over it) if you need some to effect the repair. This part of the fin plays no material part in propelling the boat so it whon't be missed - on my drive cutting the fin here improved the passage of the sprockets over the fin. You will find that the material melts to something like the consistency of warm peanut butter and holds the heat well so it stays workable for a long time. Try melting the faces of the cut and see if you can stick them together, if not melt and smooth cut pieces over the line of the cut. This is what I did several years ago - the repair looks like snot on the fin but it has held up well and the fins I sourced as a backup have never seen use. |

Gorilla Tape is a good fix. I would buy new fins and then keep the repaired set in the yak for a back up in case it happens again and you are a long way from you transportation!!! Just a thought. Or just tape the old ones and see how long it will last. Good Luck |

Had one of mine badly cut with a taut fishing line (fish on other end) and repaired nicely with a smear of "Amazing Goop." The stuff is amazing, I have found few things that it won't fix, but don't put it on styrofoam. |

Thanks for all the advice and info. I found my stock fins, which I thought I had given away, to use for the repair. It will hold for a few weeks until I figure out what I am going to do. I need a major over hall as there is a lot of wear on my drive. The chains have all been replaced but everything else is original with a lot of miles and wear. Thanks again for the help. -Randy |
