Post subject:  mirage drive loose

I just got back from an outing and noticed that my miragedrive has a lot of play between the two drums. If i pull the two drums in opposite directions lightly they move a good inch to two inches and the mirage drive does not feel very smooth anymore. Now, considering this unit has been used lightly for a total of 3 times(thats it) i am baffled. My dealer shut his doors shortly after i purchased my outback and the next dealer is not close i am unsure of what i can do. Thanks for any help

It is a bit difficult to diagnose the problem based on the description you've given however it sounds like it could be a simple drive adjustment issue. There are some good threads on this site (see FAQs) about how to adjust your drive properly - that's where I would start (it ain't hard to do). I am sure that not all dealers set every drive up perfectly before they sell them and even if they do a bit of slack probably will develop as the drive beds in.

The mirage drive is pretty robust. Turbo-fin masts can break /get bent and the cables can break, but typically only after long hard use and these things are pretty obvious when they happen! Apart from that typically little goes wrong with it other than occasional readjustment being needed. So/but you need to know the principles of how to set it up right or you are gonna be totally reliant on someone else... which in your case you do not have locally.

So if I were you I'd sart by searching out the Drive Adjustment info and check the adjustment. Then if that isn't a fruitful line of investigation try posting a better description of the problem and/or some photos. Someone here will be interested in helping and willing to give time and advice to help get it fixed up.

The chain/cables hold the drums in place, so if they're sliding in and out along the drumshaft, you would likely have loose cables. If so, the question is why. Nuts backing out? Cables slipped off drums? Post some pictures if you're having trouble diagnosing this. 8)
