Can I kayak under the golden gate bridge ? What would be things to watch-out for ? (ships,currents,waves) Is this ok ? |

you can do it-- currents can be very intense. watch out for the boat traffic, waves, currents, winds, etc - you are right in a confluence of a lot of activity- both human and mother nature so it isn't something to be taken lightly The few times i have done this we started from Fort Baker (north side), on a small outgoing tide, small seas, calm winds forecast, hugging the N side...stopping in bonita cove, then returning once the small incoming tide started. Going N around the corner of Bonita point would be very challenging in most conditions (at least for me). The combination of incoming seas and outgoing current makes it a nasty, nasty place. |

You should also look up for jumpers. According to statistics, there is one every two weeks on average. |

Really, REALLY watch the tide currents... I would not want to be headed back in with an outgoing tide.... |

You might want to put something else in your bucket list. That is a very dangerous area with ships going to and from SF with fishing boats and large passenger ships and tankers. The waters are very cold and wind is often high. The tides can be very high and low for the next months. We heard of a young and very capable sailor from the East Bay a few years ago, who took his Boston Whaler solo west through the Gate, past the potato patch and up north to Bodega Bay and back the next day for a bucket list thing. He got there and back safely. One of his neighbors was a Coastie Officer and told him that if he had gotten in trouble, it would have cost him a lot of money if he had survived to pay for the rescue due to a macho venture. Thanks for the info. I decided this trip is not that important. Heck, sixflags was too much.
