When mounting a video camera on a pole on the stern do you line the shot up on dry land prior to launch?

On cameras without remote on/off:
Do you spin around once on the water and carefully not move it as you turn it on?

Is the camera just running the whole time and if so...
Do you carry a fresh spare camera battery and empty SD card?
I'd like to catch the hookup.

I like the remote feature of the Drift HD170 Stealth:

95% of my fishing is freshwater bass fishing.

I have a PanFish mount pole slightly behind and beside me on the Outback. I also have a RAM mount in front of me for those shots. I will from time to time run the I just reach up and turn the camera on most of the time and have gotten from using it a good sense of where it is covering. I shoot a GoPro so it has a pretty fish eye lens and picks up a good field of view. I run a 16gig card in it so there is room for lots of video recording (2=hrs I think.)

You have to line it up at some point... on land seems like a good idea.

Yep!

If you wanna catch the hookup, then yep, and yep! And then you go through 5 hours of boring footage to find the 1 minute fish fight and edit the rest out.

The VIO POV is a relatively expensive camera that allows you to kind of do your editing on the fly. Basically, when you catch a fish, you tell it to keep the last x minutes and it does. It'll overwrite anything you don't tell it to keep, so you don't run out of storage space as fast. But you'll probably limit out on battery time anyway.

The GoPro comes with a battery backpack that'll double your battery time. But that will only get you 4 - 6 hours at most.

If you shoot in low-def, you'll get more out of both battery and storage.

HTH.

The Drift Stealth has such a wide angle of view that as long as you have it centered on yourself in your seat, you're going to capture action across the entire boat and several feet out to each side.

If you have 5 hours of boring video your doing something wrong!

Yes prior to launch, if I move the camera while in the water I guess the angle.

I usually start recording prior to launch, but then when I run out of battery I have to spin it around after putting a new battery.

I carry something like 4 batteries, one 32 gb SD card is enough.

I wish my camera had a remote, it would make things a lot easier

Check out the Yakattack line of camera mounts. They swivel and are adjustable in all ways whether on the water or on land they can easily adjustable.

Great products and high quality!!

Hi Dan, nice videos. What camera and camera mount are you using? Also how did you mount the camera mount the kayak? If you are using a go-pro looks like they are coming out with a remote option in March, its now listed on their site.

I'm using an olympus though 610, using a yakattack arm mounted on scotty mounts.

I got one mount directly on the front of the kayak and I installed another one on top of my cooler (the one I carry on the back of the kayak)
