Post subject:  Small cracks in attachment hull holes
I recently acquired 2 used 2005 Kayaks and one of them has small cracks where the back rest clamps onto the hull. What is the proper way to fix this? Drill small hole at the end of the crack (to stop further progress) and than use epoxy to seal existing crack? It also came with Mirage drive retrofit (which was not used by the previous owner) so i can use provided two part bonding agent while I'm doing the reinforcement of Mirage drive hole in the hull.

Trying to repair a load-bearing spot like that will be tricky - plastic welding is the only repair method that really works on polyethylene - epoxies can only get a mechanical bond and not a chemical bond - so it won't really work.

Easiest may be to add 2 new metal pad eye's (Hobie # 71220001) to mount the seat to, and just epoxy or plastic weld the crack and hole.

I like the idea of new metal pad eye, but will the small metal screws be enough to hold such a tension from backrest. If you compare it to the original which has pretty deep reach I'm little skeptical. By now I know that I have to weld it or use some heat reacting glue to close the seal.

BTW How can I get the same color plastic as is my kayak? Does Hobie send scraps to their customers?

As long as you use large SS backing washers (on the inside) it should be more than strong enough, just sock it up tight.

On Hobie AI's and TI's, the pulley for the sail sheet-line is attached at the rear of the hull with a metal padeye, but it IS screwed into brass inserts molded into the hull. But it must have far more stress on it while sailing.
