We have five new hobies, four outbacks, and one sport. So far, all of the steering levers have come loose. Fortunately, we have not lost one. I am thinking of using Loctite (275 Red) to secure these. Any comments?

Also, are there any special considerations for installing the turbo fin? I have one turbo fin kit and want to install it. Another local hobie outback owner reports that he has problems with his drives when the turbo fins are installed and has lost the use of two drives. I am wondering if the installation was correct in his case.

Hi John I have been using turbo fins on my 2010 Outback for over a year now without any issues at all. Have just returned from 4 hours fishing in heavy current and wind, the fins performed faultlessly, unfortunately the same couldn't be said of the fish :lol:

If you follow the instructions provided with the fin kit you should not have any problems, they really enhance the performance of the yak. I would also reccomend the sailing rudder as well for a full peformance upgrade.

I recommend Loctite Blue. If the threads are clean, it won't back out by itself. You may not be able to disassemble it later if you use Locktite Red.

Turbofins should be no problem. Make sure you insert the masts fully (measure them after installation) and use Loctite blue to prevent backing out. The only problems I've heard of is due to improper insertion of the Drive where the nose of the Drive protrudes under the boat. This prevents the rear fin from clearing the well and it can tear away from the outhaul clew. Standard fins are more durable and can usually withstand such mistreatment. the 2012 model Drives have an alignment pin and grove that prevents this problem, but if you pay attention, this won't be an issue for you on any of the previous year models.

When installing Turbos, a common mistake is tightening the outhaul clew. It should be loosened to where the back of the fin base just rests inside the slot of the outhaul. The instructions (at least in the past) don't tell you this.

Most users really love their Turbos (including me). 8)
