A screen door for the submarine??
(Actually, it's a good idea. I've had cats go in an open for drying center hatch)

Apologies if this has been covered before, but I did not find anything doing a search. I am looking for a simple solution to allow my kayak interior hulls to air dry without providing an irresistable environment for insects, spiders, lizards, snakes, etc. to set up shop. Since the Hobie kayaks are hard to completely drain (to me anyway) I would like to have screens that install and remove easily into the kayak hatch openings. I am sure there are many ways to do this, but I thought I would check to see if anyone has already come up with a good method. I thought about modifying the plastic hatch buckets (cutting off the bottom and sealing with screen material), but those rely on the hatch door to keep them in place (I store my kayaks on their side) and the notch for the latch would have to be accounted for. |

Why not try those fly-screen covers for cakes, a salad spinner basket a colander, a garden/kitchen seive etc etc. Or what about making some from flyscreen material ? There have to be 1001 el-cheapo products out there which would solve the problem dead easily. |

There probably are 1001 el-cheapo products out there, but I store my kayaks on their sides. I have 3 Hobie kayaks and they all sit side by side on their sides, so cake covers and salad baskets would protrude too much and would have to be installed such that they would not simply fall off. I thought about screen material and that could work, but I still have to find a way to secure it so it stays put with a kayak on its side. I could use velcro, but don't really want to go to that extreme. |

I think that I would get ahold of some of the material that a brides train is made of. You know that cloth like mesh. And rubber band it over the hatch hole. |

Hmm. Pasta cullenders come in varying sizes . . . maybe a pair could be found to fit the round hatches. Holes, inset, have a lip around 'em. ' . . . so there I was at Target in the kitchen-stuff aisle trying to fit the right accessory into my boat. Security guard said to next time just bring in the round tackle box for a measure next time. 'That anything over the Revo 11 gets stuck on their escalator. And no outriggers are allowed.' |
