| Post subject: | Winter Storage - How Cold Can You Go? |
My Adventure is kept on my boat dock and I live on Beaver Lake, Northwest Arkansas. The temperatures get down to around 10 degrees during the Winter months. Are there any concerns that I should be aware of? Are these plastic Kayaks OK to leave covered outside on a dock? Do they break when frozen, etc. etc. ? Thanks for helpful comments. Can't seem to find any info anywhere. |

I don't have personal experince with severe cold (poor little Southern California guy), but I might be concerned about anything impacting the hull when very cold. I would defer to others with actual cold experience though. |

I cracked a a/c shroud on the RV while trying to clear ice one time... Yeah, dumb move. But that's a thinner and different plastic. I've talked to a buddy who's in the petrochemical business to get some education. The polyethylene will definitely be "more" brittle when really cold, but should not suffer damage unless extremely mishandled. An example he gave me was to have something heavy fall on the boat in extended sub zero temps. Or having it blow off your car. Long odds in both cases. But I think you have two bigger concerns: One is making sure there is no water inside the boat where it might freeze, expand and burst something. Two is damage due to UV exposure. Having the plastic "freeze" should not alter the plastic long term. UV on the other hand does cause cummulative damage. Brian C |
