Post subject: | 2002 Tandem -two questions |
I just picked up a 2002 Mirage tandem. ( also have a 2007 Outback and 2009 Revolution 13). My wife and I took the tandem out yesterday and were very pleased with it. Unlike my other Mirage kayaks, the 2002 tandem doesn't have similar scupper holes to plug in a cart. What I assume are cart holes don't extend all the way through the boat; I measured them and they are app 7" deep. Is it advisable or not to insert cart arms into these to wheel the kayak to the launch? Can the 2002 Mirage drive pedal adjusters be upgraded? I see replacements available, but wondered if these would work to upgrade? Thanks |

I used an older version of the scupper cart with the early tandems and had no problems, but the hole walls were much thicker. The cart arms were about 6.5" long. I believe these holes were made specifically for the cart. If you want to try it, double check the material thickness surrounding the holes (using a flashlight from the outside, look in and see if there is any light unusual bleed trough indicating a thin wall). Make sure your cart arms extend slightly less than 7" up so the boat is resting on the adjustable stops or tennis balls rather than suspended on the underside of the deck at the top of the holes. Yes, the crank arm pins are upgradable to the current style. Tell your dealer to make sure you get the black ones rather than the newest gray version for a good fit. They should work great! ![]() |

Wanna-- I also have an older Hobie Mirage Tandem. According to the serial number mine was manufactured September 2003. I would like to better understand where you are planning to put the cart. I purchased a Malone cart and have to strap it on each time. One time I strapped it on too tight and developed a dent going over some rocks. The dent popped out, but if I have another option that would be good to know. Thx, Rob |

Thanks Roadrunner. I plan to plug a cart into the two holes just aft of the rear drivewell. If my picture goes through, you'll see what I mean. I'll follow up next week when I retrieve my carts and try them out. ![]() Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

That is interesting, I don't have those holes on the bottom side of my kayak. ![]() |

Wannabe, check your serial # again -- I think you have at least a 2004 or 2005 model. There have been 4 generations of Tandem/Oasis and yours looks like a second generation model. This was characterized by smaller sponsons (side flairs) and a larger weight capacity (from 410# to 550#). I believe the "plug-in" carts came out in 2004. Tandems had the cart capacity after serial # 2450 according to the '04/'05 parts catalog. In case anyone wonders, the 3d generation Oasis ran from 2009 to 2010 and had a tri-lobed hull bottom (like the Revolution) and the current model (total redesign) started in 2011. ![]() |

Thanks Roadrunner- My serial number looks like CCMY(orV)2295C202. Any info you can shed on the year is appreciated. |

Here's a picture of the tandem ![]() It doesn't have a sail attach point, no side storage, no handles, and has what I assume are cup holders in front of each seat. It refers to the Hydro-Drive on the yellow lable behind the front seat. The seats aren't readily removable; you'd have to unscrew the attachment screws. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

That looks similar to mine from September 2003, but previous owner(s) added hatches to each side of the yellow stickers and one large one behind the back seat. |

http://www.hobiecat.com/articles/boat-s ... cation,15/ So you have a 2002 model hull built in March 2002. |

NorCal- yes, the picture is there. It would be interesting to verify the year of your tandem from the serial number, and see if Roadrunner or others can shed some light on which version we have. It's interesting that your Tandem appears to be newer, but was not molded with cart holes. |

Rob, what's the rest of your serial #? There should be a letter and three numbers at the end. I had hull # 0402 and it was a 2001 built in Aug. 2000 (H001). ![]() |
