Post subject:  Foot straps on mirage drive pedals

While I was cruising around the lake today in my Revolution 11, I decided to try operating the mirage drive without the foot straps. It was great! I found that it allowed me a more comfortable ride. My endurance was much improved since I was able to position the foot pad higher up on my foot. Has anyone else found this to be true?

Yep, no need for them. Took them off day one.

I believe those straps are a kind of "carryover" from bicycling, where the straps allow one to pull up on the pedals as well as push down. For 99% of our needs with a Mirage Drive, that's unnecessary.

I may change my toe straps to heel straps for next year.

I take them off in the wintertime, when I wear thicker shoes and the toe won't fit in the stirrup.

Suggest searching the forum for "heel straps" as this is, IMHO, the simple solution once the Hobie straps are removed. The heel straps allow you to "rest your heels" in the strap and not use other muscles to keep your foot in position an the pedal.

I took off the straps right away, not needed. I also used silicone sealant to glue a 1 oz. weight to the bottom corner of each pedal to keep the pedal facing the correct way to make it easier to put my feet on.

My strap on one pedal broke so I removed them. Have had no issues except for the pedal pad turning away from me so thanks atavuss for the tip about the weights siliconed to the pedal will give that a try.
