Post subject:  T handle up / down rudder control line repair

I have a Sport and the pig crimp closest to the stern loosened and the bungee slipped out. Since the hull doesn't have a rear hatch, I couldn't figure out how to stretch the bungee and re-crimp the bungee to the knot in the control line.

I finally put the open crimp in the crimp pliers, slid it up to the knot in the bungee, and then slipped the control line in the open crimp. I carefully slide the crimp up both lines, using the added reach of the pliers to meet the knot. I couldn't tell if I was able to pass the bungee knot past the control line knot, but did my best to jam it up there before squeezing the crimp shut.

After loosening up the rudder tensioning nut, it seems to be working pretty well.

Is this a proper repair job of this nature? Thanks.

Even though I backed off the rudder drum nut, the bungee separated from the up down deployment line again. How can I fix this w/o being able to reach through towards the stern? Thanks.

Just a guess, but is it possible to splice some fishing line.....say 15 lb rating and 10 feet long to the spectra lines, so you can pull the lines back into the kayak for easy repair???
Then, using the fishing line to pull the spectra line back out to the rudder assembly.......again, just a thought since I can't see exactly what your Sport looks like on the interior....

Maybe use a camera in the hull to see what is going on? I can't quite gather what is happening.

Did you review the T handle rudder control instructions here: http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/Twist-n-Stow_Repair_Manual.pdf

First time trying to upload pics. This is a nice clean shot of the area in question- but in one of my Revos. You see the ss pig crimp holding the bungee and black cord together? Since the Revo has a rear hatch, it would not be an issue to re-attach the bungee and cord where the knots are with a new crimp.

However, the Sport does not have a rear hatch, and even though working blindly, I can feel the knot on the black cord where I need to overlap the knot on the bungee and then crimp down. However, I cannot do it with one arm/hand stretching the bungee knot past the cord knot and clamping tight.

I might try a cable tie since I can loosely close it over both lines and then pull tight with one hand if I think I am in the right spot.

Thanks in advance!

I think I will tie a line around the bungee and the cord and try to bring it around a scupper post or something else inside to use as a stationary pulley and stretch the bungee tight. Then I can reach in with the crimper and get it in the right spot. I tried a cable tie but it was too hard to do it blindly.

I don't want to mess with disconnecting the spectra at the rudder drum for more slack evefn if spliced at the end to pull back again; I'm afraid of messing it all up! :o

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

A few weeks ago I sold the Sport. Nice little boat, but without a rear hatch it is too complicated to deal with.
