Post subject:  2015 hobie outback rudder problem

I have been having stowing the rudder after a day of fishing. Goes down with no problem but coming up is a different story. I pull and pull but no go. I tried turning the rudder while pulling on handle but still nothing. I loosened the bolt that holds the pulley just a little but when i tested it offshore in current the rudder flipped up. I had to keep the down line pulled tight so I could steer. I would like to know if there is a torque setting so I can try it out before I call my dealer. First time hobie owner so I don't know if its a common problem. Thanks all...

That is normal. You have to pull the down line and cleat with tension to hold the rudder down.

Release the down line and pull the up to retract. You loosened the drum bolt... Maybe a bit of silicone on the drum? There is a small "latch" that the rudder sets into in the housing when down. You can file off the small hook. This latch was used in the older up/down systems before we went to line and cleats. Usually loosening the drum bolt allows that to release.
