A few years ago when I first started looking into kayaks in general I remember reading a thread on these boards where a guy had used some PVC pipe to build a small "cage" on the stearn of his outback. this contained area was for a kid to be able to stand and hold on to the railing, but not be able to fall off. I believe it also had a seat built in somehow. Does anybody know the thread I am talking about? Or include any pictures you guys might have of things that can be done to make taking a young child with you easier. |

How young are we talking? We take our 2 yr old out with us on the TI. She either sits on a trampoline with the older kids or sits on one of the round hatches between our legs. She wears a life jacket no problem. We bought one of those foam stadium pads for her to sit on. The last time we went out it was just her, my wife, and I. She preferred to sit on the deck in front of us and promptly fell asleep. |

Probably 2 years ago or a little more. I am thinking my 2.5 year old is still just a little young to just be on the kayak openly with me... I also hit a small river often so the cage would help with some of the rockiness. |

I dunno, I wouldn't want any cage entrapping children in the event of a capsize or other mishap... |

I used an after market (non-Hobie) seat on the rear parcel area of my Adventure to take my daughter. The straps of the seat were led to the various padeyes around the cargo area with extensions made of cord; these kept the seat 'sitting up' so that it had some rigidity that would support her. It worked well and on longer excursions she'd quite happily nod off in her seat, what with the movement of the boat and all. She was more than 2.5 yrs old but I can't recall how much older before she started being allowed out with me; probably 4 or 5. |

Actually our son is riding with us on an Oasis since he was a few months old. Since this summer he (now 2.5yr) either likes to sit in the front of me – already pedaling –, or he simply sits on the back department. We've removed the bungie cords of course. Right now I'm modifying the back department (exchanging some cleats for padeyes) to attach a 3rd party seat. Will post photos as soons as this is done and approved by Kai  Klaus |

COOL mod Kind of related... When we were with family on a float down the Suwannee River in the spring one of the kids climbed into my daughters boat and sat in the back. When we got into shore my brother who wasn't with us said that I needed to be careful since the kayak was rated for 1 person and there were now 2 even though the kids weren't close to the weight limit. Has anyone gotten in trouble putting a small one in the back (life jacket on of course)? |

Everyone here takes their kids on the kayaks with them. As long as a pfd is on the kids, they don't care. Could depend on where you live though. Different places and different rules. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
