Thanks guys. The DIY project is good, but I use my sail one most outings. Tom, any suggestions where I should attach. I was thing my hatch, but I do move around a lot and it could be a bother at times.

I have mine on my hatch lid, on the TI, one on each hatch lid and carefully aligned with each other so I can give heading instructions to the crew when they're sailing the boat.

Haven't found them to be in the way necessarily.

I don't know about anyone else but I tend to use my cheap Garmin more than anything else. It's the cheapest yellow E-trex model, I think I paid $50 or $60 dollars for it about 4 yrs ago and it's still going strong. Quite a bit of the year I'm out most weekends with it always on (I always track and log my distance covered and average and peak speeds, when I get to 15 miles I go home). I have to replace the double A batteries about twice a year. I have a neck strap and just dangle it around my neck. I also have compasses in each life vest pocket (part of the whistles). I also keep a compass in a dry box inside the hull as backup.
I don't find myself following compass headings very much though I have been caught in fog a few times, knowing your heading is pretty important in fog (very scary).
I also have my I-Phone in my shirt pocket always with a Lifeproof waterproof case, but I don't use that all that often. I have the I-Sailer app that has full live charts with all channel markers and depths and can record my tracks if I want it to, where I can export my tracks to google earth if I want. I also keep one of those I-phone external batteries in my dry box but have never needed it.
When we are offshore off Key West (kind of dangerous waters) I always have current paper charts in a dry bag under my seat (I think this is a CG requirement, along with flares, veri pistol, etc). I alway carry 200 miles of extra emergency fuel on board as well just in case I get lost at sea (never had to use any of that yet, but you never know in the open ocean, as weather is very unpredictable off of Florida.
I have another cool app called dash, that records all your tracks, speeds and headings on my I-phone and display on your gopro (or any camera) videos real time speed,heading, and track info just like the dashboard on your car (better yet the app is free). Coolest app ever....

I purchased an ultra-cheap ebay compass quite a while ago.

Something like this:

Cost me about $2. It's small, but works very well. All plastic, so nothing to rust.

I attach it to the front crossbar on my A.I. with a small velcro strap.
