Hey guys,

While I wait for my new outback to arrive I spend my days thinking of all of the nasty stuff I am going to do to my kayak when it arrives. :o

I want to install the rectangular hatch as a lot of people do, but I was thinking about doing the cutting with my dremel as I think I have more control over the cuts. Anyone have done it this way? would it be possible ? Or is this going to give me a rougher cut than doing it with a jig saw?

Also plan on installing the PA H rails on it, can someone advice what size bolts and nuts to use for a strong mount?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Dan

DON'T.... I used my dremel and it did not do good. The dremel can run away quickly. If I had it to do over I would have used my jig saw.

I use the dremel barrell sander drum to clean up the edges. I have not use the cutting tool for the main cuts.

Barrell sander for the rough cuts and clean up the edges... NOTE: cut smaller than athe hole you want and then sand to the correct size. YOu will be amazed how tight you can get the item to fit into the hole you cut.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you're wanting to put an H-Rail on your Outback, I would recommend either the 9" (84626001) or 21" (part # 84626101) straight H-Rail bolt on kit with hardware included...the H-Rail upgrade kit is meant specifically for upgrading the PA12 or PA14, not for the Outback.

I was planning on cutting it to size to have 2 long rails on each side. I have seen some pictures of a couple of outbacks like this, appears to work OK.

If you're okay with cutting and doing the mod yourself, I'm sure it'll work for ya.

Any advice regarding the nuts and bolts to use? Not sure how big the bottom holes are on those rail kits.

Thanks again for your help. 8)

The upgrade kit comes with all the mounting hardware needed to get the job done.
