| Post subject: | Hobie GT parts on V2 drive |
My V2 Mirage drive has become worn out....needing new main shaft, drums, and idler. Before I purchase replacement V2 parts, I wonder if anyone can give definitive answer on whether or not GT parts will in fact work on V2 drive. I noted a comment on the Austin Kayak site that someone found they DID work on his V2 drive!!! Sure would like to by the better parts of I am replacing parts  If anyone can shed some clear light it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

I had a similar situation, I had two V2 drives on my 2012 TI with many many miles on them (for the longest time I pedaled 10-15 miles/wk year round foa a long time), needless to say the drives and fins had thousands of peddling miles on them. One of the drives I upgraded to glide tech (there is a kit available). I also put new fins on. On the other drive I took apart, and cleaned up, but only ended up replacing the fins on the second drive. Since most of the components come with the upgrade kit, I was able to cherry pick the best drums and misc components from both drives to update the second V2 drive. Note: when you pull the drives apart, inspect the main shafts, if they have excessive wear, probably not a bad idea to replace the shafts also (my shafts were fine (minimal wear) so I didn't need to replace my shafts). Afterward the peddling effort on both drives were like night and day difference. However the glide drive was only very slightly better with only slightly less peddling effort. Turns out 90% of my improvements came from the new fins over everything else. Who knew the fins were a consumable item and probably should be replaced regularly (mine were my original fins). I can mirror fusioneng's comments on the upgrade to the GT with the V2 Mirage Drive.....except I do not have the total miles he has logged on the fins.....I upgraded my drive in January 2015 and I have about 1500 miles on my 2013 PA-14, so I still think my fins are in good shape. At least I hope so! Regardless, upgrading to the GT mod is worth while as the friction of the drive system is reduced maybe 15%?? |

In my case You could visually see that my old fins were all stretched out and the trailing edges were all wavy. The fins were 4 yrs old with literally thousands of peddling mile on them (I alway pedal 100% of the time (part of my exercise program, trying to average 10-15 miles/wk (year round) peddling over the last 6 yrs. As everyone knows I have human powered tri-power boat (pedal, sail, hybrid propulsion), definately not a stock TI. I invited Bobagain to help me try to set a new fuel economy goal of 150mpg,(averaging 8-10 mph) with two peddlers on a fixed 10 mile course (around Lido key in Sarasota,fl). Bob offered to bring his new Glide drives (from his new TI), for the trial, so we threw them in the boat. We started out with my old mirage drives, then switched out to his glide drives part way thru. I have to admit the difference in peddling effort was like night and day. I had no idea whatsoever my mirage drives had deteriated that much. I immediatly ordered the upgrade kit and upgraded one of my drives, and also rebuilt my other drive installing new fins on both. I had no idea my drives/fins were totally shot because it occured gradually over a long period of time,( who knew (lol)). BTW: the trial was a miserable failure, we barely hit 80mpg, I'm still two yrs away from engineering the solution (I'm very bummed) FE |

Get the equivalent of this http://slhobie.com.au/gear/hobie-kayak-parts/miragedrive-parts/577-miragedrive-glide-tech-upgrade-kit. Plus new shafts. If existing shafts "look" ok then reinsert flipped 180 degree to swap bearing surfaces. |

Common oversight my old drive had old wavy turbos on, got new drive with standard STs and they had more grunt that the old turbos. Upgrading to new turbo fins made a huge difference. |
