Post subject:  Scupper Hole and Sleeve Question on a 2017 Outback
Noticed today that the scupper hole sleeve on the right side facing the bow has a 1/4 inch gap between the deck and the top of the sleeve. Viewed from the bottom the thread portion is not flush with the deck like the left side. My question is, does this pose a potential leak or is the scupper sleeve a protection and the scupper is fully enclosed? When I put the Hobie cart in the scupper holes the whole kayak tilts to the left side.

If this is a problem, how should I fix it?

Its just a reinforcing sleeve inserted in the scupper tube, to prevent cart damage. Look inside the hull to confirm for yourself. It does'nt provide the waterproof seal. In itself it should'nt be causing the cart to sit unevenly, unless it protrudes somewhat under the hull, which would be obvious

What concerns me is that there is a gap of a 1/4 or more between the hull and the sleeve on the top side. I can feel that there is no hull between the sleeve and hull. So if the hull is continuous, how come I can not feel it. You can see from the bottom shot that the sleeve is not straight in the scupper hole. Is it possible to realign the sleeve so that it is flush with the body of the kayak as the left side is?

The scupper tube is moulded in. It is water tight even without the black liner there. Then scupper tube is then threaded and the black liner screwed in like an inner sheath. Not sure if self tapped or thread cut separate. It looks like one insert was simply not screwed in as far as it could be. Not sure how tight these are screwed in and whether you can try screwing in further yourself (some kind of taper plug to give grip), or given its a new yak ask the dealer

Thanks WAVERIDER! The reason I am hoping to fix this myself is that the dealer is over an 1.5 hours away in Hood River, OR. Kind makes warranty repairs a little bit of an issue.

I was thinking that if I place the one cart post in the hole and gently try to move the sleeve back into place this might re-seat it properly. I am pleased to hear that scupper hole is molded into the hull. I just hope that the sleeve hasn't breached it by being so far out of alignment.

After molding the hull, the hull is quite hot and is a gelatin like mass until it cools down, which can be many minutes. It looks like the scupper hole got hung up slightly during de-molding and became oval. This shouldn't hurt anything and won't effect water seal. If it makes you feel better you can pump silicone into the gap so it doesn't fill with sand and debre.
The water seal is molded in, and the sleeve is mechanical re-enforcement to protect the scupper hole (separate functions).
Why the kayak sits crooked is another matter unless it's sitting on one of the tubes and not allowing the cart to go in all the way. If it was me I wouldn't worry about the kayak sitting a little crooked while on the cart, shouldn't hurt anything. These boats are all rotomolded which is an in-precise process, you will find minor imperfections in all of them, plus or minus a 1/4 inch is pretty normal on most dimensions. I have had a couple hulls with oval scupper holes, they worked fine, and as long as they seal, and the scupper cart fits, it should not be an issue. I would fill the slot with silicone though to prevent it filling with sand.
