Just bought an oasis with reverse fins. It does not track straight at all. When pulling the rudder, it goes in pretty narrow circles. When flipping the fins (front to rear and vv) it just circles the other side. When reversing, it goes straight, and pretty fast. What's wrong? Thanks for help. :(

I've got a 2012 Mirage Oasis with standard V2 drives. As long as the rudder is down and straight, the boat tracks fine.

When the boat wont track, look back and see what the rudder is doing and tell us what you see.

Place your kayak on a couple of saw horses to aid in the following examination:

Deploy the rudder and look at the rudder to see if its warped, curved, not straight?

Is the rudder position in the center of the stern?

The kayak always needs the rudder deployed in order to track on course.

Thanks guys. I'm aware that I need the rudder to track on little longer distance or in windy /wavy conditions. But even without rudder it should track about straight. It literally makes circles of <100 feet diameter. With rudder I can go straight but as it needs to correct direction it looses speed, resulting in about 2.5 mph speed.

The boat will not steer or "track" without using the rudder. The hull is designed for maneuverability (no skeg), so the rudder is required. If we had a skeg on the keel... the rudder would not be able to steer well enough. Use the rudder at all times.

Be sure you pull fully down and then cleat to lock the rudder down.

The key to using the rudder is to make tiny corrections, otherwise it will act a a brake. Our MO with regular old pointy fins goes 3.5 -3.9 mph (GPS) all day with little effort. And, no the boat won't track worth a flip with the rudder up.
