Submersible trailer for two kayaks

Post subject:  Submersible trailer for two kayaks
I have been using a Yakima trailer for our two Revo 13 kayaks and its one drawback is that it cannot go into the water. Jet ski trailers are few on the used market and seldom one that will take two jet ski's or two kayaks.

At this point in my life I value my time and do not want to invest a lot of time in converting a utility trailer and hoping for the best.

My question comes down to whether anyone is using a Malone or other off the shelf trailer for two Hobie kayaks and if it works well for submerging the trailer and float off the kayaks.

I have used submersible trailers with my inflatables and often had problems with getting them to float free when the boat was loaded with scuba tanks and do not want to get my truck's rear wheels into the salt water. The Malone kayak trailers look like the kayaks sit quite high above the ground which may not be a problem in getting the kayaks on or off with the trailer submerged.

Im not a trailer expert, but seems to me by your description a jet ski trailer (either new or used) would fit best what your looking for if the 'kayak specific' trailers sit too high to unload. Also, as you might already have seen guys use 3" pvc pipe on these jetski trailers which helps the kayaks slide off and back on the trailer very easy. I use one myself - just my 2c :)

If price doesn't matter i am liking the trailex trailers.

Plus cradles or transfer what you have. My plan is to leave 8inch tires for local short stuff and put a set of 12inch tires on for x-country trips.

I did quite a bit of research and ended up with an aluminum Continental Trailer. I only use it with 1 TI, but swapping out the bunks would enable 2 to be carried side by side.

The problem I have encountered in my search is that a double jet ski trailer that actually is lower to the ground is going to be 101 inches wide. The narrow profile jet ski trailers put the bunks above the wheels and so now little better than a kayak trailer. The PWC trailers have winches and riser bars that would get in the way of normal length kayaks on these trailers.

I am leaning toward a trailer that I can modify to run 4 lengths of PVC pipe to support the Revos and have them closer to the ground and easier to launch by floating them off.

Surprised in a way that not one of the kayak trailer manufactures are designing trailers so that a kayak laden with fishing gear can be floated off or on at the boat ramp. Seems to me like a real and obvious market segment that is being ignored completely.

:idea: This Trailex trailer can be easily modified to shorten the vertical posts and add PVC parallel pipes for your two Hobie Revo's, side by side. There is no reason why the kayaks need to be elevated as high as the photo indicates. The aluminum is easy to cut.

I used a Harbor Freight trailer and modified it to fit my TI. Easily modified to fit whatever you want. It cost $250 plus mods, if it fails or rusts out over time, it's $250 for a new on and just move over the mods. Sits low, tows great, and I love it. Sure, there may be better options but $250 new, it's hard to beat.

We are in the same boat. I currently have a PA 14 and a Tarpon 160. The Tarpon is going to upgraded to an 2018 Outback in December. I did a few modifications in order to accomplish the design consideration of backing the kayaks into the water to float off.

1) Northern Tools 5x8 trailer
2) Extended the tongue
3) Bearing Buddy
4) Submersible tail lights
5) Plywood deck to raise the SuperStrut above the fenders
6) Eye bolts on the UniStrut for straps
7) Removed two leafs from the springs to reduce trailer bounce

We have made 2 - 1,850 mile trips and numerous local trips without any issues. If you have any questions, let me know. Hope this helps.
