I'm looking for saddle type pads to mount on my Thule square tube racks in order to transport my Outback upright.

Any suggestions on make and model?

Something like this that will work but I don't want to pay over $200 that they want for these.

In my experience pretty much any saddle will do. I went for the Fleabay option because I was also unwilling to pay the exorbitant new price that was being asked. I got a couple of different types (I needed to transport more than 1 kayak) and there's not much to choose between them!

Thanks. I'm looking on eBay now. The Yakima Mako saddle appears to have a large footprint which I think would lessen the chance of hull deformation on a hot day.

Hi shred56, I'm just curious why you prefer to haul upright. I also use the square tubes. ty

I have a Rhino Rack bar extender to help me load and unload.
My thought is it would be easier to just set the kayak on the saddles after it is up there rather than wrestling it over upside down like I have been doing.

Hello SHRED56, I'm going to use a roller-loader this summer and discovered that it is easier to transport hull down. Have you found any saddles or pads that work well with the "flat bottom"? TY

This is the only photo I have of my 2010 Hobie Outback atop of my Subaru Outback. About 6 years ago.
Image

I used Yakima 66" bars, Mako Saddles, rail grab 4 pack and most importantly, the Yakima Showboat roller to protect the rear spoiler on my Subaru.

I liked carrying the kayak "upright" as stuff does not get thrown around inside or do you need to remove the seat if you invert the kayak.....just fold the seat down and I used a bungee to secure it.
The Outback was easy to load aloft by placing the bow on the showboat roller, pick up the stern and push onto the Mako saddles.
After strapping the kayak on to the crossbars as shown above, I added a bow and stern safety line.

You might be able to save some $$ by buying used equipment....OMHO, don't go cheap on the roof rack to protect your investment
