Post subject:  Hobie Mirage kayak value

My friend has a 10 year old Hobie Pedal Kayak (Mirage?) which is about 10 feet long. What is the market value of this kayak...I wish to purchase it?

If you look on craigslist you can get a pretty good idea of what used Homie mirage kayaks sell for. Finding used Hobies is very rare as most people tend to hang onto them, especially the popularmodels like the revolution and outback. Hobies as long as the hulls are sound and don't leak tend to hold their value very well. We have owned around 8-10 of them over the years. They keep going up in price for new ones, so it ends up you can buy one keep it several years then sell it for near what you bought it for.
For example our 2008 Oasis we bought for I think $2400, then traded for a new 2010 TI, I think we got around $1800. The TI at that time was $4000, a new one now is $6500. Our 2012 TI we bought for around $4800, and recently sold for $3000, I have seen other 2012 TI's listed for between $3500 and $4500 recently.
All of our Hobies we ever sold went within 1-2 weeks from when we listed them.
Usually the model type is written on the side, if you can't identify the exact model, post pics of it and others on here will give you good advise on how much it's worth, ( as long as it doesn't leak, the hulls if they leak typically can't be repaired). The Mirage drives pretty much last forever, and canbe repaired typically regardless of condition, and older V1 drives can be upgraded to V2. A new mirage drive is around $700 bucks, and used typically don't go below $400, (even very old <10 yrs old).
Hope this helps

The value depends on the model, condition, completeness and upgrades / accessories. A picture or serial # would help. Short of that, you can compare this boat with what you see on the Hobie website. On an older boat, you want to look closely in the drivewell area and inside the hull at the "cam columns" for any cracks. These are high stress areas. An inspection of the hull bottom gives a good idea of how well it has been cared for. If it's a Sport, it has a short cockpit so if you're over 5' 10", your legs may be too long to pedal effectively. If you get to try it out before buying, look inside the hull afterwords for any leakage. Good luck! 8)

Keep in mind wear and tear on the drive, and availability of spares if its an original 10 year old model
