Post subject:  Crack in my Outback

My Outback is two years old I and use it after the winter ends and the weather is nicer. Hobie makes a fantastic product and I have to say I am a little surprised that the hull has cracked so soon. I weight 175 and I am an old guy so I take care of things in hopes that I get a little extra time out of them. It is stored in a boat shed out of the sun on 3" pvc pipes as not to deform the hull. I was curious if anyone has had a similar issue. The crack is where the seat hits the hull in the rear. I noticed while putting the seat on today. My concern is water will enter the hull there and I would not have confidence going on trips in the lake or gulf and the water is rough. Over time the hull will take on unwanted water and become a problem while I am out there.

Your kayak could be under warranty. I would contact your dealer you purchased it from and see if that is the case. If your Outback is a 2018 the hull has a 2 year warranty. I believe the 2019's and newer have a 3 year hull warranty.

If you've already checked on the warranty or don't want to go that route IMO it does need to be repaired. Since this area is a structural area I would plastic weld it or have it plastic welded by a dealer experienced in making these repairs.

Stored on PVC Upside down I hope? If left upright, the hull will distort over time (slump). Could be the issue if the bottom pushed up into the cockpit area.

Get the pictures to your dealer. They can forward with a claim for review.

Yes, thanks, unfortunately Hobie and my dealer are closed because of the virus so I will wait for things to change for the better. I did speak with someone in warranty claims but could not help until my dealer opens again, thanks.
