I am looking into buying a kayak to be used on small lakes/ponds and perhaps slow-moving rivers. I don't fish and don't plan on fishing. I want to paddle for exercise and enjoy the outdoors, so pretty much I want a recreational kayak. The one thing that draws me to the Mirage Passport is that it has the option of adding a sail. Would the Passport 10.5 work for me as a recreational kayak, or is it really meant for fishing? |

It will be fine for the purpose you describe. Not sure what pond/lake size you will be using but the Mirage pedal drives make small lakes suddenly tiny. At a decent exercise pace you will cover 300 to 400 feet per minute. I had originally planned on using my kayaks for exercise on a nearby 2500 foot (1/2 mile) long and narrow lake that was okay for a workout on a canoe or pedal boat. It ended up way too short to enjoyably exercise on our Hobie Outfitters due to having to slow and turn so frequently (every 5 minutes). Could not get into a steady workout groove... Perhaps a more oval lake where you could do figure 8s would be okay. We use our kayaks (Oasis and Outfitter) regularly on slow inland and faster tidal rivers. Just make sure to pull the drives or flutter pedal in shallower water sections. If you can move up to the more expensive Passport 12, for a very slight weight increase you will get much more payload capacity (both weight and surface area), better tracking, better sailing, and a slightly higher hull speed. Thanks Peter for the feedback. I'm planning on using the kayak mostly in Tampier Lake since it is so close to my house. I actually was planning on paddling more than pedaling. |
