Is it better to trailer a kayak hull down, deck down or on a diagonal? Thanks in advance for feedback.

I have trailed and stored my PA-14 on this modified Hobie Trailex trailer for the past 7 years and no issues.

Most of us start out dutifully following Hobie’s recommended practice of hauling kayaks upside down. But for larger kayaks, or kayaks with lots of accessories, or kayaks with stuff stored in the hull, this becomes cumbersome with lots of added tasks before and after kayaking. For my Oasis with 2 seats, fishfinder, torqeedo control, lots of stuff stored inside including two batteries, and other gadgets, I wanted to simplify rigging and derigging. Like many others, I switched to upright transport on PVC bunks several years ago and have no regrets.

Do note that Hobie recommends strongly against this manner of transport.

I built a trailer in 2015 for our Outbacks. Now have a new 360 12 and a 2021 Outback on the way. It is basically a Triton 8 foot ATV trailer which I modified by adding a steak pocket kit and then building a wood frame to support the boats. Basically each boat is supported by two ten foot 2x4's that are carpeted and padded for about two feet near the middle of the hulls where they make the most contact.

For me, storing them upside down is just completely impractical, especially considering the amount of fishing gear my boat usually has on it.

My understanding has always been that it's okay to store them right side up as long as the weight is more or less distributed evenly across the bottom of the boat?

My kayaks have spent zero time stored upside down. I am going to assume I am doing something right given that have and continue to work perfectly.*

*I would however like to see a detailed summary of the various storage concerns and what can go wrong.
