Post subject:  Kayak Safely

There have been many recent stories on kayak mishaps, several that were fatal. Here are two recent ones with happy endings that could easily have been seriously bad. Both involve Hobie kayaks.

Be safe out there!

I always found it hard to understand the requirement of a whistle vs. just screaming, but i suppose I wouldn't be able to scream for hours in the fog. The stupid things keep breaking off my vest, but I will look for a 20 pack next visit to a dollar store. Reason is the following survival at sea story by a Cessna pilot downed mid pacific with a tiny life raft resembling a Hobie inflatable.

Whistle: a nearby boat launch from a ship that saw her (only) flare couldn't find her amongst 13 foot waves despite strong moonlight. The building wind was about to tumble her out and probably created an obscuring constant spray. She claimed her desperate whistling overcame the engine noise of the boat launch at close moments and saved her.

PFD: she claimed it's failure to inflate also saved her life, because climbing into her raft was so close to impossible that a deflated state was needed. Lesson to us is practice reboarding a kayak with bulky pfd on. Oh, and if you got a great deal on dark life vests like me, you can improve visibility with reflective tape.

Technology: don't assume various gadgets will translate into sure rescue. For instance there was a garble in coordinates that kept one sure-of-itself rescue ship away. Folks confuse precision with accuracy; coordinates can have the former without the latter. She originally got help with a little airband radio asking overflying airliners to do a slight S turn as a sort of marker to help relay relative location to authorities. Then endless hours of coast guard overflights and airdrops almost came to nothing due to various mishaps.
