I bought a little Passport 10.5 this year and love the boat but not the basic seat or drive compared to a friend's newer Revolution 13. I'm not a fisherman, mainly a recreational boater. I primarily go out on local lakes for exercise, birdwatching, exploring. I 'might' be interested in adding a sailing rig eventually, which it seems like most of these boats are equipped for. My question is this, will a late model Outback be a good boat for recreation alone? Are they slower than the long, streamlined Revolution series? I realize they are wider and will be more stable, which appeals to me. The added weight doesn't seem like a big concern and they are much more readily available in the used market. My complaint about my 10.5 is that with my 190 lbs. leaned back enough to sit comfortably in the basic seat I am bobbing a lot as I pedal along while anyone in the Revolution 13 is flat and stable in the water, much quieter and smoother. Thoughts?

The outback is built for stability it is not a fast boat. You mention your weight, I'm more than that at around 220 pounds and I take my outback in the ocean which is a lot rougher than the average lake and feel very safe in the outback. If it's rough, water does come over the side but drains straight out the scuppers or the hole for the pedal drive. So kind of depends if you want speed, or stability. If you want both, could get an outback and add some kind of motor like say, a bixpy, I have done this and it's made travelling decent distances a breeze. Love my kayak

Thanks Mahi. I don't think I'll ever add power since one of my big goals is recreation/exercise and I'm in no hurry. The Passport I have is definitely not a fast boat either. Thanks for the tips.

I tried out a new 2021 10.5 Passport & the seat kept coming detached from the single clasp that hold it in place. I stupidly thought I just needed a larger kayak so I purchased a new 12’ Passport. That seat keeps popping off too, so I can’t safely use the kayak. I also plan on upgrading to a model that has 2 seat attachments. I hope the dealer will apply my full purchase price of $1,869 to a better model. Good luck to you in your pursuit of an upgrade.
