Post subject: | For Matt Miller - Own two boats - both subject to drive well |
I purchased two Mirage Drive Kayaks from Yellowfin Sports/Jim Caldwell in 2005. One Outback SUV and one Adventure - both 2006 models. I became aware of the strength/cracking issue in the Drive Well and found that both my boats are affected. This makes me very apprehensive - I have about $3500 invested in these boats and it looks as though the hulls will not stand the test of time. There are no dealers in my area and it looks as though the "fixkit" is difficult and messy - probably beyond my capability. My serial numbers are: CCM-F-0(illegible)99-K-506 Outback CCM-D-0391-K-506 Adventure What should I do? Or more to the point, what can Hobie do for me? |

Where do you live? There are several dealers here on the gulf coast yellowfin is still open. I've found if the boats are being used and are still in working order there prob is no problem; however still put the retro kit on. You will have to take the boats to a dealer, unless you do the labor yourself. |

Too difficult, messy and beyond your capability ![]() I assume you know how to back out a threaded bolt and re-insert a longer threaded bolt into the same hole...and I will also guess that you've used glue (in this case, Marine Goop) before... Seriously, it is a VERY simple fix. Mike |

No Dealers within 200 miles anyway. I looked at the instructions and they go on for PAGES! I'm getting on in years and my eyesight is no good for detail work, I'm afraid. |

Absolutely not! I have never had the courtesy of a reply from any representative of Hobiecat. |

Steve, Just a suggestion, but it might help considerably if you were to give us your location (city and state). There are a number of dealers around (like sunjammers), as well as many users who are willing to help folks in their area if they can. Best, Dick |

If your boats are among those that have had problems they should have mailed the fix kit out to you along time ago. No matter, your hulls are still covered and they extended the warranty. I live hundreds of miles away from my dealer and had no problem when my hull leaked, just called, sent a photo of crack and new hull was shipped directly from Hobie. Took about 1.5 weeks total. |

I do not always see posts, so the correct way to handle this is to contact your dealer... A few notes: The actual problem reresents a very low percentage of the models affected. We decided to do a preventative upgrade available to all models possibly affected. Problems develop on boats when pedaled heavily or with heavy loads and Turbo fins. This does not "just happen". Most will never experience a problem. The kit is simple to install. The instructions are one page. Not sure what you have been looking at ("goes on for pages and pages") The 2 year warranty is extended ONLY if the kit is installed. Kits were mailed only to owners who had registered their boat warranty with Hobie prior to the kit mailing (Spring/Summer 2006). |
